Form 4868
Application for Automatic Extension To file
Purpose of the form:- The taxpayer can use this form to request a 6 month extension of time to file a return OR a 4 month extension of time if out of the country.
- Although this form gives the taxpayer an extension of time to file the return, it does not give an extension of time to pay taxes.
- Do not file form 4868 if the taxpayer wants the IRS to figure the tax or the taxpayer is under a court order to file his return by the regular due date.

PART –I: Identification
If you checked the checkbox in General Information Sheet in the panel “Electronic
Signature“and this form is added then all the details of the taxpayer flows on this form from the general information sheet.
PART – II: Individual Income Tax
Line 4:
- This line represents estimate of total tax liability for 2006.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040 then value on this line flows from Form 1040 pg-2 Line 63.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040A then value on this line flows from Form 1040A Pg-2 line 37.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040EZ then value on this line flows from Form 1040EZ Line 11.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040NR then value on this line flows from Form 1040NR pg-2 line 58.
If you expect the estimate to be zero, enter zero. If you have not completed Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR, enter manually the estimated tax liability.
Line 5:
- This line represents the total 2006 payments.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040 then value on this line flows from Form 1040 pg-2 line 72.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040A then value on this line flows from Form 1040A pg-2 line 43.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040EZ then value on this line flows from Form 1040EZ line 10.
- If the taxpayer files form 1040NR then value on this line flows from Form 1040NR pg-2 line 70.
If you have not completed Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR, enter manually the estimated amount but do not include on this line the amount you are paying with this Form 4868.
Line 6:
The package subtracts line 4 from line 5. If the result is negative then zero is set.
Line 7:
Enter on this line the amount the taxpayer is paying, if applicable.
Line 8:
Check this box if the taxpayer is a U.S. citizen or resident and is out of the country on the regular due date of the return.
To Qualify as “out of the country” the taxpayer must either:
- Live outside the United States and Puerto Rico with the main place of work being outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or
- Be in the military or naval service outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
Line 9:
If the taxpayer did not receive wages subject to U.S income tax withholding, and your return is due June 15, 2007, check the box on line 9.
